Find your pages in the AltaVista Web Index
When you enter a host name in the query field (www.redcross.org), AltaVista uses the host:[hostname] command to find pages that have that host name.

Find pages that link to your site
When you enter a host name in the query field, AltaVista uses the link:[URL] command to find pages that link to matching URLs. This feature works with a host name(www.redcross.org), part of a URL (www.redcross.org/services) or a complete URL (www.redcross.org/services/index.html).

Pages from the host you enter (www.redcross.org) are automatically excluded from your results using the -host:[hostname] command. If you want to see pages that link within your site, uncheck the box labeled "Don't return pages within this site."

AltaVista Webmaster Search sometimes finds results that match your host: or link: search but are not exactly what you are looking for. The search box on the results page allows you to focus your results by adding terms to your query. Here are some of the things you can do.

Exclude hosts. To exclude pages from a certain host, add -host:[hostname] to your query. To exclude pages from www.arcbs.redcross.org.au from a search for pages in www.redcross.org, your query could be:

host:www.redcross.org -host:www.arcbs.redcross.org.au

Specify a domain. To find results from one particular domain, add domain:[domain] to your query. To find pages matching www.redcross.org from the org domain only - and exclude results from all country domains - your query would be:

host:www.redcross.org domain:org

Exclude a domain. To exclude results from a particular domain add -domain:[domain] to your query. To find pages matching www.redcross.org, excluding those from the au (Australia) domain, your query would be:

host:www.redcross.org -domain:au

Specify a term. To find only pages containing certain text, add a term or terms to your query. To find pages matching www.redcross.com that include the word donations, your query would be:

host:www.redcross.org +donations
